The Po Leung Kuk Main Building (Grade I Historic Building)
The Po Leung Kuk Main Building (Grade I Historic Building)
The Po Leung Kuk Main Building was designed by Mr. IU Tak-chung, one of the earliest Chinese modern architects in Hong Kong and former directors of Po Leung Kuk. Completed in 1932, the building is built in Neo-Classical architectural style. The dome on top symolises power and public authority, echoing with the broad public acceptance and support enjoyed by Po Leung Kuk. In 1950s, a portico was constructed to the main entrance for sheltering people from the elements. The architectural concept can be traced back to Ancient Rome and was often found in designs of temples and public buildings. The columns are modelled after western classical architectural features, but also feature inscribed couplets from Chinese culture. The building is one of Mr. IU’s final designs, yet has been the home of destitute women and children. It is also the Headquarters where important decisions are made, and charity traditions are carried forward by directors and fellows. Located in Causeway Bay, the Main Building has been a testament to the development of Kuk’s work in the district. The Po Leung Kuk Main Building was officially regraded from a “Grade 2 Historic Building” to a “Grade 1 Historic Building” during the Antiquities Advisory Board meeting in December, 2023.

The Race Course Fire Memorial (Declared Monument)
The Race Course Fire Memorial (Declared Monument)
The Race Course Fire Memorial commenced construction in 1922 and incorporated a blend of Western and Chinese architectural and decorative elements. The Chinese archway is inscribed with the characters “福” (fortune), “祿” (riches) and “壽” (long life), while the marble memorial plaques in the centre are inscribed with the characters “中西士女之墓” (the grave of men and women from the East and West) and the names of the victims with Chinese and English stone tablets on either side. The memorial is the first and only communal grave in Hong Kong constructed using donations solicited from the public and for the victims of a disaster. On 26 February 1918, over 10,000 people from the Chinese and international communities joined the annual Lunar New Year Derby Day races at the Happy Valley Racecourse. Due to overloading, the bamboo-built stands collapsed and caused a disastrous fire that eventually claimed the lives of more than 600 people of various nationalities and backgrounds. After the calamity, the Tung Wah Hospital swiftly undertook relief work and assisted in the collection of the bodies of the deceased. The government then allocated an area known as Coffee Garden in So Kon Po for use as the permanent cemetery for the victims. The Memorial was renovated in 1974, 1983 and 1993 using funds provided by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and its original appearance is still preserved. In 2015, it was declared a monument.
Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Building (Grade I Historic Building)
Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Building (Grade I Historic Building)
Serving as the permanent headquarter of the Hong Kong Red Swastika Society, The Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Building was constructed in 1940. The society established a branch in Hong Kong in 1931, but did not build its headquarter until getting the organizational registration approval from the Hong Kong government. During the Japanese invasion of South China, the Hong Kong Red Swastika Society set up free clinics both on the ground floor of the building and in Kowloon. From the post-war period until the 1960s—before Hong Kong established a comprehensive healthcare system—the society offered free Western medical services treated up to 18,000 patients annually. To provide a wider range of medical services, the Hong Kong Red Swastika Society introduced free ophthalmology services in 1962 and free dental services in 1985, both of which continue to operate today. The Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Building was confirmed as a Grade 1 Historic Building in September,
Confucius Hall
Confucius Hall
In 1928, Mr. Kan Hung Chiu donated 120,000 square feet of land on Caroline Hill Road in Causeway Bay to establish Confucius Hall, aiming to promote Confucianism and the teachings of Confucius and Mencius. As a token of gratitude for his donation, Wen Su, the former emperor Puyi’s tutor, presented Mr. Kan with an authentic unfinished examination script from the imperial palace’s final civil service examination during the late Qing dynasty. The building’s design is both functional and elegant. The sloped floor design on the ground level allows every audience member a clear view of the stage. The premium seats upstairs are antique chairs designed to suit the stature of Asians. Some of the bracket sets connecting the columns and floors are made of reinforced concrete in traditional Chinese style, and the ventilation outlets features jade ruyi-shaped decorations on the ceiling. Renowned scholars who gave lectures at Confucius Hall include Guo Moruo, Mao Dun, Qian Mu, Tang Junyi, and Jao Tsung-I. In June 2020, Confucius Hall was designated as a Grade I historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board.
No. 54, Village Road, Happy Valley (Grade III Historic Building)
No. 54, Village Road, Happy Valley (Grade III Historic Building)
Built in the 1920s, the V54 is one of the few remaining pre-war private mansions. It is a threestory French architectural style house that adapted popular Art Deco in the last century. The main entrance features granite staircases. The garden fence is mainly made from plaster. The exterior shows imitations of stone carvings and arched doorframes and windows. The building has separate wooden staircases for the homeowner and servants (also known as the “maid staircase”), chimneys that pass through every floor, baroque floor tiles, and a backyard. Originally designed as a symmetrical two-unit building, the mansion has undergone changes through time and ownership. Currently, only half of the building remains at 54 Village Road, becoming one of the well-preserved historical buildings in Happy Valley. V54 was confirmed as a Grade 3 Historic Building in June, 2020.
